Carstairs Connections - Healthy Communities
Examples of Healthy Communities are Okotoks and Cochrane."Many would be surprised to learn that the greatest contribution to the health of the nation over the past 150 years was made, not by doctors or hospitals, but by local government."
Dr. Jessie Parfitt, Oxford

Carstairs Connection is a group of your friends and neighbours working towards a long term vision of a healthy community. The group formed in 2006 with the passing of a Healthy Community resolution by Town Council. The active group includes representation from the town, the health region, the school and community members. Corresponding members (by email) include the pharmacy, the fire dept, the pastoral association, parent link, the library, AADAC and businesses and community members.

Carstairs Connections has quite a list of accomplishments over the years. Check them out here.

Walk ... For The Health Of It!
Chances for great prizes for the farthest walkers.Walking is Canada's most popular physical activity because it is enjoyable and requires no special equipment or costs. In Carstairs, we are lucky to have an indoor walking track at the Carstairs Arena. This provides residents with a rubber track to walk on year round. The walking track is open from 7 am to late night during the winter months!

From November 2009 to April 2010, the "Walk for the Health of it Challenge" had us walking to Cozumel, Mexico ... a total of 8,346 kms! We stopped for a margarita then we turned around and walked back home again! We wrapped up the walk with a celebration that included margaritas and nachos!!! This year's Top Walker was Donna Maxwell - 909 km. Runner-up was Everett Blain - 862 km. Congratulations to everyone!

New to Carstairs? Looking for a walking partner? Contact Terri Sperle, Director of Community Services at 403-337-3341 Ext 244. We have a special online program that keeps a running total of the steps or kilometres walked by all participants. It will be operational again in the fall.
