The Town of Carstairs is committed to protecting your personal information and ensuring your rights under Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and Access to Information Act (ATIA).
You have the right to:

- Report a suspected privacy breach

Request Access to Information
You can request access to records held by the Town of Carstairs under the Access to Information Act.
Use this option if you want to:
- Obtain copies of records
- Access your personal information
- Request general municipal records
How to submit a request:
- Complete the Government of Alberta Access Request Form
- Submit your request:
- By email
- In person at the Town Office
- By mail
Forms are also available at the Town Office.
Fees may apply when submitting an access request. Fees are established in accordance with the Access to Information Act (ATIA), the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), and the Town of Carstairs Rates and Fees Bylaw.
If applicable, you will be notified of any fees or additional costs associated with your request before it is processed.
Request Correction of Personal Information
You may request a correction if you believe your personal information is inaccurate or incomplete.
How to submit a correction request:
- Complete the Correction of Personal Information Form
- Submit your request to the Town of Carstairs

Make a Privacy Complaint
You can submit a complaint if you believe the Town has not properly handled your personal information.
You may make a complaint if your information has been:
- Collected, used, or disclosed improperly
- Accessed without authorization
- Not adequately protected
- Retained longer than necessary
How to submit a complaint:
- Contact the Town’s Privacy Officer
- Provide details about your concern (what happened, when, and what information was involved)
- Include your contact information
What happens next:
- Your complaint will be acknowledged
- The Town will review and investigate as appropriate
- You will receive a response within legislated timelines

Report a Privacy Breach or Concern
If you believe your personal information has been lost, accessed, or disclosed improperly, please report it as soon as possible.
Examples of a privacy breach:
- Personal information shared without authorization
- Lost or stolen documents or devices
- Unauthorized access to systems or records
What you should do:
- Contact the Town’s Privacy Officer immediately
- Provide details about the incident
- Include your contact information
What the Town will do:
- Review and assess the situation promptly
- Contain and investigate the issue
- Determine if there is a risk of harm
- Notify affected individuals where required
- Take steps to prevent recurrence
